Every one who plans to provide people with a service must provide what they need to live on earth. Unless a product or service has utility for people they will not buy it.
So, what is spiritual psychology giving to people that they need to have to live on planet earth?
Spiritual psychology provides psychological and spiritual services.
For twenty years, I worked in the mental health field, including being the executive director of a couple mental health agencies.
Scientific psychology has done an excellent job describing human behavior. The descriptions of the various nosological states in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of the American Psychiatric Association are correct.
We do not believe that we can heal people by only emphasizing their bodies (as neuroscience does) and or their behaviors only (as behavioral psychology does).
We believe that human beings are spirits having physical experience and, therefore, we must address their spiritual, as well as material needs.
Spiritual psychology teaches people about their psychological and spiritual dimensions, not in an either or manner, but both. For example, secular psychology enables us to understand neurosis as denial of the real self and pursuit of a mentally constructed ideal self. (See Karen Horney, Neurosis and Human Growth, 1999.) We know that as long as human beings pursue ideal selves that they tend to be anxious, prone to anger, sadness, depression, paranoia, delusion, mania, and other mental upsets. As long as people think and behave from a false self, they make themselves miserable. Human beings tend to be peaceful and happy when they think and behave from their real selves.
But what is the real self?
Spiritual psychology posits that the real self is spirit. It posits that until a person thinks and behaves from spirit (which is love) that he is not going to be mentally healthy.
To heal mental disorders, spiritual psychology posits that we must factor in the dimension of spirit.
Spiritual psychology attempts to understand the nature of spirit in a rigorous, scientific manner.
The ultimate goal of spiritual psychology is to enable human beings attain inner peace and happiness. (Peace and happiness are synonymous.)
To attain its goal, spiritual psychology gives a realistic view of the self and teaches people to think and behave from their real self, not their false selves. This manner of thinking and behaving leads to mental health.
Spiritual psychology makes a significant contribution to human growth. If you contribute to the realization of the goal of spiritual psychology, you make a positive difference in people’s lives.
Sincerely,
Ozodi Thomas Osuji, PhD
